Sync Hold’em Manager across 2 computers

OK, if you are like me you play poker on more than one computer. I have my laptop for out on the road and around the house, and I have my multi-monitor desktop setup with my skype and camtasia and teamveiwer for when I am ready to put in a serious grind. The only problem is how do we sync our hand histories between the two?

I have tried a lot of different ways, USB flash drive, emailing them to myself, sharing them across the home network and copying them from computer to computer. They all work but they are also all a pain in the butt. I am not a very organized person so I was never sure if I got them all synced up. You want to have as many hands as possible for your HUD stats, plus you need a complete copy of everything for tax purposes. So is there an easy way to do all this, something that we can setup one time and then forget about?

The answer I found was Dropbox.com. All I had to do was download the software and set up a free account and I was ready to go. Dropbox creates a folder in your “my documents” folder whose contents automatically sync to your online account anytime something is changed. If you have dropbox installed on a second computer these files will automatically change as well as long as both computers are connected to the internet. Sounds pretty handy for what we need, right? Well, it gets even better. these files are also stored online so if something happens to your computer you can always rebuild your database. You don’t have to worry about it if your hard drive fails or if lightning hits your house and fries your computer, you just sync them up on your new computer and off you go.



So, here is how I have my dropbox setup. There are three folders inside that I use for my hand histories, they are-
1. HAND HISTORIES laptop
2. HAND HISTORIES desktop
3. HH archive

On my laptop I changed the archive folder in the auto-import settings from this:




To this:



Then I did the same thing on my desktop pointing it to HH desktop. Then I added my HH desktop folder to my auto-import list on my laptop like this-



I also added the HAND HISTORIES laptop to my desktop auto import. Notice that these folders get archived to HH archive in the dropbox folder so all the files end up in one place. It only takes about 15 minutes to install the software and set up the folders and then everything is automatic.

This is so much easier than running back and forth with a flash drive or trying to network your SQL databases. You literally just set it and forget it. The only thing you really need to remember is that Hold’em Manager waits 15 minutes before moving your hand histories to the archive so if you finish a grind and shut down your computer right away the hands might not show up in the dropbox until you turn that computer back on and start up Hold’em Manager again.

A downswing is a period of time in which a player incur in extended losses due to bad luck.

Any game with an element of luck has a certain amount of variance and for some short periods of time the normal distribution will suffer deviations.

Try to maintain mental stability to avoid increasing more than the normal losses due do this fact.

Side Pot

The side pot is the pot on the side in a hand with one or more all-in players. The main pot in a hand is the pot that all active players may win. When a player goes all in but there are more players who have more chips then he, they still can bet and a side pot will be created.

It is possible to generate as many side pots as necessary.

Was it a good decision ?

He folded for a good reason. It was understandable. He is a regular school-teacher that got staked on a high-stakes game, now with a 140000 dollar profit. Such an amount of money will change his life, and he was not willing to risk the chance of loosing them. In a long term poker-strategy sense, that was a foolish play. But from the standpoint of a regular guy doing this one time, up that amount of money, its a different story. In that sense, it was a sensible play.

Metagame

Metagame is a term that describes all psychological aspects of poker. The word "meta", in this sense, means "beyond" or "transcending".

For example, if you only ever raise post flop with Top Pair (Top Kicker) or raise preflop with premium hands then you are effectively telling everyone almost what you have. This way, they will fold your raises and just bet when they hit a very good hand. You will win small pots with your Aces and Kings and lose big ones when your opponents hit trips or better. Meta game there would be to call with a few raising hands and raise with a few calling hands. Just a few so that people cannot so easily put you on a narrow range of hands, because it’s easily exploitable.

Another example of a meta game play is to make a loose call on the river, a call you wouldn't normally make, in order to create the impression on the other player that you will make "bad calls" on the river. This, then, might stop players from trying to bluff you in future hands.

Note that your opponents must be clever enough to adjust to their surroundings, but not clever enough to understand what you're really doing.

If you make money playing one table, think how much you can make playing two, three or even more. At first you should only play one table at a time to get used to the game and to the poker room. Pretty soon you will realise how many hands you are folding and how unexciting it can be. You will be tempted to start playing weaker hands just to keep yourself interested. It is a very bad idea if making money is your plan. I would propose to play at least four tables for two reasons: to stop monotony and of course if your a winning player, multiply your money making. But don’t be too greedy, with too many open tables, you might loose concentration and take wrong decisions.

The Psychology of Poker

A successful poker player must deal with psychology on many levels.

First of all, we must learn our own strengths and weaknesses, avoid playing when mentally unstable and not tilting. Part of using poker psychology is not letting other players get a good read on our playing style. Very loose players need to understand that their bluffs are not going to work all the time because they have no credibility. Very tight players have to realize their bluffs are not going to work because observant players already know what hands they are playing. If you do not mix your style up you will never be able to fool your opponents.

Secondly, we must learn to understand other players, which include detecting opponents tilt tendencies, deciphering tells, and see through bluffs. Many players will tell you bluffing is an art form. It takes heart to make a great bluff. It takes fearlessness to execute a huge bluff. More importantly, it takes impeccable timing to pull off the right bluff. Psychology is used to make money by betting and raising to project strength in a hand which otherwise you would not win.

I personally did not start to win until I made a very difficult and important change to my playing style. When I first started playing I only stayed in for the top 19% (25% at 6max) of starting hands. This is a great way for beginners to learn because you gain tremendous amounts of experience and do not lose much money.

Winning poker is all about the long run. Despite this there is an endless amount of lazy play in the game, where players squander occasional bets hour after hour. Those squandered bets represent a fortune. Every bet is important, as is every action, as is every reason for an action. Conventional "wisdom" is usually wrong. Most players lose, so if you want to win, you often want to do things differently than most players!
